Welcome to our 2009 foaling season!
This will be our 6th year with the cams online and I hope you'll all enjoy watching the mares.
For the new people here, I’ll try to explain a bit what’s going around here during foaling season.
Please notice we are in the Netherlands and we are a couple of hours ahead of the US.
The time on the board is our local time.
We have a lot of mare-watchers from the Netherlands but on this board we try to keep everything in English as another language is not allowed by Proboards (message board host).
You do not have to sign up to post messages but if you do post a critical comment or solicit, your post will be deleted from the board without explanation.
It is a privilege for you to be able to come into our barn and home and see the mares giving birth.
Be advised: Sometimes things can and do go wrong, we will do what we have to do at that moment to help both mare and foal.
If things go wrong, we might shut down the cams. But we'll update you as soon as we can.
During a foaling I try to have an updater for the board on the phone.
They normally post when the water broke and what is happening in the stall with the mare and what I am doing.
When a mare is foaling:
I do help my mares if needed!
So I’m in their stall, they are used to it.
You can see me every evening around 10-11 pm my time, feeding them, checking them and cleaning stalls again. Just to let them get used I’m there and it is normal for them I’m there and messing around in their stalls.
When I think a mare is close, I will leave the lights on in their stall.
It doesn’t bother them and they are used to it too.
Here in the Netherlands things might be different than in the US.
We are not allowed to give shots like banamine or oxy.
I do have Quadrisol but that can take some more time to kick in.
So if I think a mare needs something stronger, I will call the vet.
I have foaled out mares for more than 10 years and know when something is wrong.
If I think there is a problem, I will call the vet.
Normally the vet is about 3 minutes away from the barn. When he has a day off, I have 3 other vets I can call, it only take them some more time to get here…
If you see a mare foaling and nobody is in the stall with her:
First, take a 2nd look and is she really foaling?
Remember my mares like to sleep laying flat out and they can dream like a dog, moving their legs and sometimes you can see them nickering.
It’s funny to watch but doesn’t mean they are foaling
Most of the mares will go up and down several times before water breaks.
Is there a message on the board?
I normally post an update every evening (remember the time difference, we are ahead of the US) and I will let you know when I’m taking naps.
When I think a mare is really close, I will post that too and normally I’m up and watching her.
But hey, they can be sneaky so if you see a mare going down and up, down again, rolling, no post on the board I’m watching her or you read in the evening post I’m taking naps… PLEASE TRY TO WAKE ME BY CALLING 011 – 31 646 7469 68.
If you do, please post on the board you called me so other people know I’m on my way to the barn.
If you have a question about the mares or what is going on in the stall:
Please post a message on my board.
During foaling there are people who now what's going on and what I am doing with the mare or foal.
If they don't know, I will try to answer your question asap. Just remember I will watch my mares close after foaling to make sure they accept their foal, the foal is nursing and pooping and all so it can take some time before I'm back at home and can replay...
Just remember .. everyone does things different.. I do things my way. This makes nobody's way right or wrong, just their way of doing things. If you do not like my way of foaling I will ask that you hit the little x in the corner and not watch.
Due dates 2009:
I only have 3 of my own mares to foal out this year. Not too much sleepless nights
I plan on showing more this year so no outside mares.
Well.... you never know but not planned yet
2/12 Isis She is a 12 years old silver pinto AMHA mare.
This will be her 7th foal, 2nd foal at our barn.
Last year she bagged up nice and had some wax before foaling.
She foaled at 308 days, so she needs to be watched early!
1/23 she will be at 300 days.
She started pacing and shaking her head about 30 minutes before foaling.
3/8 Dynamic A 5 yrs old bay pinto AMHA mare.
This will be her 3rd foal, 2nd foal here at our barn.
She foaled at 305 days, so she needs to be watched early!
2/16 she will be at 300 days.
4/5 Macy A 14 years old welsh cob mare, this will be her 8th foal, all born here.
Macy will probably go early, most of the years she foaled around 325 days. That will be 3/26.
In 2005 she foaled around 2pm so watch her during daytime too.
Macy is a real wax and dripping milk mare, she loves to play with us for weeks
Yes, I do have colostrums replacement at home and if I think the foal needs it, you can see me giving the foal a bottle after foaling.
Doesn’t mean there is a big problem, I’m only trying to prevent a problem.
